11 Toons I Want Back On TV

|
 Just because it's in 3D, doesn't mean it's good!

I don't know about you, but in general, I'm no fan of today's cartoons. Long gone are the days of great toons with depth or at least a decent storyline. Today, our cartoon stations are being plagued by the likes of teen pop stars, unoriginal ideas, and boring characters. I mean, what in the world is a "Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go"? (Yes, I googled it)

Cutting to the chase, here's my list of 10 cartoons I miss and want back on the air, and I'm sure that you might just feel the same way. Starting today's dose of nostalgia would be:

Johnny Bravo

Ah, who doesn't love/hate this guy? With his recognizable blond Elvis-do, brawny physique, inability to attract women, and his slow, dim-witted nature, Johnny was by far one of the funniest characters on TV. I remember laughing at the jokes that just never seemed to grow old, and the characters in the series were just so lively and fun to watch.

 Gargoyles

Being one of the old Disney shows with an actual, interesting story, I instantly found Gargoyles captivating, and unlike many shows today, the characters actually had depth in them, and a considerable amount of character! Plus, unlike the shows today, Gargoyles has a unique, dark feel to it, which made it all the better.

Invader Zim

Invader Zim has been one of the most entertaining shows on Nickelodeon. Unlike most cartoons, the main character in this show tries to destroy the earth, which makes the story all the more interesting. The characters are great too, my personal favorite being GIR, Zim's dysfunctional, little, taco-loving robot companion. The story is quircky, fun, and sometimes a little random, but that makes it all the more entertaining. I also love the art style they used for the series!

Scooby Doo

Who hasn't heard of this show? With lovable characters and every episode being a new mystery, as well as Scooby and Shaggy's antics, insatiable appetites and their random strokes of luck, it makes the series very interesting to watch, and very addictive. Now, why can't cartoons today be like that?

Mummies Alive!

What's just as good as Gargoyles? Mummies! I mean, who would not want the undead as your personal bodyguards? Okay, maybe not everyone, but on the other hand, the animation is great (unlike many new shows where they don't really care about the quality of the animation) and the story includes a good dose of Egyptian mythology. The show is never short of action, and that plus the mummy transformations make the show fun to watch.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

How I miss this show. It's been one of my all time favorites, with the lovable characters, interesting art style, fun stories that leaves you wanting more, and the turtle's weird pizza eating habits, it is by far one of the coolest cartoons ever, agreed?

Extreme Ghostbusters

The difference between this series and the Real Ghostbusters is that Egon, an original buster, has grown older and leads a new team of Ghostbusters. I chose to include the Extreme Ghostbusters because  I grew up watching it, the story's more modern-day, the art is great (the ghosts being much more grotesque than today's cartoon ghosts), and the theme song rocks!

Captain Planet

Okay, so I admit it, I'm an environmentalist, which would explain why I enjoyed watching Captain Planet as a kid. The show screams 'Save the Environment', with every villain, protagonist, and episode for that matter involving the battle against pollution. Okay, sure Captain Planet looks like a freak in tights, but hey. It was the 90's, right?

Double Dragon

Based on a beat-em-up game, Double Dragon is definitely never short of 90's butt-kicking action, cliche lines and weird names. But it's entertaining all the same, and it at least has some sort of story to it. Actually, come to think about it, I don't really know why I liked the show. Maybe it was because of the fights, the theme song and the characters that made me love it so much.

Megas XLR

One of my all-time favorites, Megas XLR is a hillarious cartoon, with a witless protagonist, his equally sagacious sidekick, and a girl from the future, Megas XLR is a great source of laughs, action, and great animation. Also, for all you action junkies out there, every episode ends with the protagonist destroying something, like a city, a giant spaceship, or even a planet; all this usually due to his idiocy and his lack of knowledge about his own robot. A pity the series was cancelled; it would have beaten the pixels out of every 'funny' cartoon on TV today.

Samurai Jack

Samurai Jack is, to me, the creme de la creme of oldies cartoons. It has a beautiful, captivating story, with a lovable, simple protagonist, a funny villain (I mean, what kind of name is Aku?), and delightful side characters, each one with a great story of their own. The art style is simple but great, and every episode has its own silent message to the audience. Samurai Jack was a masterpiece, and it is a real pity it was cancelled. I hear that there will be a Samurai Jack movie coming out soon, but no word of the release date has been heard of. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though!

And that concludes my list of old school cartoons I want back. Leave a comment on what you think about this post, and what other cartoons you miss, because I'm bound to have missed out a few!

On another note...

I never liked He Man. Seriously! So his girlfriend's name is She Woman then? What's with that riddiculous costume? And did he say that his powers were fabulous in the opening sequence? Nuff said.

Until Wednesday!

Haha, I personally never watched any of those except the occasional Scooby Doo. xD

You should try to find links to watch these shows online and post 'em. Just sayin'. :]

Well, if I did, I would be supporting piracy, no? Just saying. :)

How about Archie's Weird Mysteries??
And Twisted Whiskers is just utter balderdash. It's completely nonsense and all it does is corrupt the minds of young children with it's stupidity. Even Higglytown Heroes is better than that.

Jill said...

Oh I almost forgot about that show! Haha, I remember watching that as a kid too!

And yes, Twisted Whiskers is complete rubbish. It's lacklustre, and I don't even understand what the whole point of the story is. Oh, and don't get me started on Upin and Ipin!!

HAHAHAHA. OMG, WHAT THE HECK?

UPIN AND IPIN IS AN AMAZING SHOW. SERIOUSLY. >(

It teaches little kids (who understand Malay) about Hari Raya! Don't dis 'em, seriously.

And darn! No links. -sad-

In response to Ally:
In my opinion, Upin and Ipin may look cute (to some people...I'm not one of them unfortunately), but I find their personalities bland and their speech a little expressionless. It's just not my cup of tea, I suppose.

Aida said...

Upin and Ipin is not that bad of a show. It's better compared to Oggy and the Cockroaches which has a terrible theme song.

Ooh, I used to LOVE Mummies Alive! :D They were, in my opinion, the COOLEST living/dead bodyguards ever!!! I love the transformations (I think they went all "BY THE POWER OF RAH!" ??)

TMNTTTTTTT. HAHAHAHAHAHA :) Good times.

There's something straaange, in the neighbourhoood. :D GHOSTBUSTERRRS!

LOLOLOL, Captain Planet! Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, Heart!!!

Oh my god, Megas XLR. I never liked that show, honestly. xD I always thought it was kinda fake & ghey but hey, it's definitely better than cartoons nowadays.

Samurai Jack! I loved Aku's antics. :D :D :D

(I never liked He Man either.)

Jill said...

Aida: Agreed; that show is dumb and unoriginal. Really, what on earth are cartoonists thinking nowadays?

Shufei: He man is the epitome of pansy heroes. Oh, you watched Captain Planet too? :D Ah, I'm glad to know that more people appreciate these old shows too, and I'm delighted to know that you've watched nearly all of these shows. Awesomeness. :)

There's also a particular cartoon that I remember..but I can't remember the name. It was on Cartoon Network and it was about this boy and the all the cells moving inside him. I used to love that cartoon coz' it was the only indirect sort of educational cartoon.

There was also Winx Club that was on Cartoon Network that is just rubbish. OH! And WHY DID THEY CHANGE POWERPUFF GIRLS TO POWERPUFF GIRLS Z??
Powerpuff girls Z is just terrible imitation of the original one.

Gosh, I know! It's like the new show on Disney called 'Stitch' without Lilo in it! He lands in Japan instead of Hawaii...And I know it was meant to cater to the Japanese and they're just showing it here, but to tell you the truth. Stich without Lilo and the rest of the ohana is just...dull. And furthermore, I don't like the flow of the animation in the series.

PPGZ is a fakee one! It's not even by the same company, lah. PPG was by US. PPGZ was by Japan.

And PPG ROCKS! :D

And guys, you sound so serious talking about cartoons it's making me upset. =.= Cartoons are meant to be ENJOYED. Don't be party-poopers!

Jill said...

Ally, we're talking about how the newer cartoons aren't so great. How can we enjoy something like that? :\

Shufs said...

I know! :) But mann, they were good. I also used to watch Sailor Moon & Dragon Ball. x]

"I mean, what in the world is a "Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go"?"
I have no idea - all I know is that it's stupid.

Oh my Gosh! I love all those shows! Invader Zim is the best and by far the funniest! (For me at least) Ahh, I miss GIR!

Mummies Alive was also awesome! Hahaha! Johnny Bravo was so funny! Every movement of his hand had a whipping sound to it! I used to laugh so hard.

Samurai Jack was the best! Simple story, nice artwork, funny scenarios! I missed it so much, wish they could air it again. Darn, Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go! Actually my friend loves it, haha.

Oh and if I'm not mistaken Megas XLR still airs but in the wee hours of the morning. Great post, reminds me about my childhood! :)

Adrian Liao said...

Oh the boy and the cells was the show OZZY AND DRIX! That was a great cartoon, educational yet cool!

Aida said...

OH YA!! OZZY AND DRIX!!
Good times..good times..
And Did you know that He-Man's twin BROTHER's name is She-Ra?
Sounds like the Evan Twins from HSM.
(Get it?? Fabulous?? Nvm..) And he is also known as the so-called "Most Powerful Man in the Universe"

Jill said...

Shu Fei: I miss Pokemon. It used to be on the TV all the time! Gosh, and Power Rangers too. :)

Adrian: I'm glad this post made you feel that way! Megas XLR? Seriously? I demand you tell me the exact time!!

Aida: You've got to be kidding me... She-Ra? I just googled this...She-Ra is a woman! But still, what a name. What a name.

Shufs said...

YEAAAAH. I used to watch Digimon in the mornings too. xP

Jill said...

Good times.
